Nintendo's Donkey Kong Jr. unleashes your inner hero as you guide the daring ape on a rescue mission, swinging through vines and dodging obstacles; while SEGA's Zaxxon propels you to the stars, where pixelated spacecraft battles ignite your competitive spirit in a cosmic showdown. Elsewhere, Grandstand's Astro Wars teleports you to an intergalactic realm, where lightning-fast reflexes are your only defence against alien invaders.
Immerse yourself in an era of radical innovation, where these electronic marvels transformed every surface into an electrifying arcade.
So many games make up this amazing and unique area of gaming, and we intend to shine a light on them in this book...
Loved the actual game-related content of the book, slimmer than I expected for a coffe table-ish book, but it's very well printed, bright, with detailed content on each game that's included but I wonder if there will be a volume 2. The information is fun to read, especially for me who was a kid in the heyday of these machines, so it's not just learning about them for me, but reliving them. Also, it shipped FAST, considering I live in the US it got here in a matter of days.
Cons: Format is unusual, only about half the book is discussing the actual games. The other half is comprised of 1/4 what was happening in various decades and 1/4 discussing the companies that manufactured the games; seemed padded. One of the pages had a small tear, and there were a couple of games where images of the game 'console' itself were included but not the actual screen which, in my opinion, is the most important thing; that's where the gameplay happens. For example, as you can see in the image, the description of Zaxxon lauds the gameplay and visuals but doesn't include an image of the actual screen. More images for each would have helped overall. Lastly, as is the case with every other game-related hardcover I've ever ordered, the cover and pages are fingerprint magnets. I have to wash my hands before reading it.
Still, small issues overall, love the book and hope we'll see a volume 2 covering even more.
